With the majority of the country addicted to soda, we know that it contributes too many of the calories we take in each day, and plays a part in the weight gain that plagues us. So, when someone desires weight loss, in an effort to help themselves reduce caloric intake while maintaining their soda addiction, they switch to the diet formula of their soda of choice. The question is, can Diet Coke weight loss happen? Let us take a look at the pros and cons to using Diet Coke for weight loss in place of the traditional version, and let you be the judge of whether or not it will help you.
Since one can of soda per day will add up to more than 5 pounds per year, it stands to reason that eliminating those extraneous calories will equal some form of weight loss. Yes, it will. And, by switching to the diet, calorie free version of Diet Coke, you get your soda without the weight gain. Recently though, Diet Coke has been speculated to be as harmful to your body as the calorie packed version; because of artificial sweeteners, and the carbonation of the water contributing to disruption in the body.
The artificial sweeteners do not contribute to a raise in glucose levels, or tooth decay the way that real sugar does. This means that it can help in weight loss if substituted where you usually use real sugar. For instance, if you are currently drinking thirty six ounces of Coke, you are consuming an additional 480 calories per day; adding up to nearly the 3500 calories that make up one pound of body fat. Imagine losing that one pound per week by changing to Diet Coke! Now this is not an exact science because we are assuming that those calories are automatically stored as fat each week after remaining unused, but you can see the ultimate point.
The blame for obesity has been placed on artificial sweeteners because there is still an obesity issue even after healthy food options have been presented on the market. The problem lies not with those, but with the low and/or no fat diets, which lead the body to hunger and graze eating; and the bland tastes generally trigger the cravings for the foods that we are not supposed to have. We also eat for reasons other than hunger, which contribute to gain...when we are bored, when we smell something we enjoy, etc. We tend to make up for lack of aroma or visual stimulation with taste, which packs on the calories and pounds.

If you find yourself unable to give up Coke, or drinking more than three cans a day, at least do yourself a favor and switch to Diet Coke. The caffeine will give you the boost you need without having to count the calories. As always, make sure your Diet Coke weight loss includes a balanced diet and never replace meals with a Diet Coke.
